This article provides action steps for building bias checks into design processes, including understanding the background, uncovering biases with local researchers, clearing up assumptions with visual tools, and reshaping thought patterns to eliminate biases.
Biases can be built into every part of the design and implementation process. Therefore, teams must continually monitor whether biases have been uncovered. This article can support teams with the planning and initiation stage of their networks (and continue to help as a centering resource) in order to check their biases in program design, team structures, and implementation efforts.
