Equity traps can provide a useful concept for preparing school leaders to effectively identify and interrupt systems of oppression (white, heterosexist, anti-immigrant, racist, patriarchal). The outlined characteristics and strategies focus on the idea that “Who we are and how we are with each other matters more than anything else” and promote a culture of revision and redemption.
Teams can use this to support team members’ growth mindset and outline action strategies. Utilizing these example characteristics and leadership strategies, teams can reflect on and monitor the existing power structures and dynamics in their school potentially contributing to their understanding of the problem and impacting the lived experiences of staff, students, and community members.
