The story of self is one part of constructing a Public Narrative, an organizing strategy developed by Marshall Ganz. Public narrative is a critical leadership tool that can invest others in a particular effort or initiative. Leaders and teams can leverage the Story of Self and the larger public narrative approach to engage others in critical equity work and initiatives by aligning around similar values.
Teams can use this tool when building relationships within and across their teams. A “story of self” involves a purposeful and directed sharing of oneself to introduce experiences and potentially forge connections while allowing space for alternative narratives. Through this vulnerable and personal exercise, teams can identify opportunities to understand and leverage individual team members’ lived experiences/ perspectives.
